I have been following the progress of G6LVB, Howard Long”s fantastic SDR project for the last 2 weeks or so and thought it time to share it with you all.
The FUNcube Dongle was originally designed to be an accessible way to be able to receive amateur satellites, most notably AMSAT-UK”s forthcoming FUNcube cubesat (http://www.funcube.org.uk).
The passband is 96kHz, tuneable from 64MHz to 1,700MHz. The tuning is via a USB HID interface meaning that as well as your favourite soundcard SDR program, you”ll need a little app supplied with the FUNcube Dongle to control the centre frequency.
It”s also compatible with XP, Vista, Windows 7 in 32 bit and Vista and Windows 7 in 64 bit. Initial testing on the Mac and Ubuntu 32 and 64 bit shows compatibility too, however the frequency control application for those platforms has not been written yet.
So, no USB drivers are required!

Projected availability of the first production batch of the Pro version is December 2010. Pricing is subject to assembly costs, but to give you indicative pricing we are working on an initial price of the Pro version to be circa USD150/GBP100.

David, GI4FUM reports that Mozambique Scouts will be active during Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) on October 16/17 using the Amateur Radio callsign C91MS.
He writes:
I plan to be QRV in Bilene, Mozambique for JOTA this year. GI4FUM, GI8MIV, G4LDL and G8KWD will fly out from Heathrow on 13th October and should be QRV from Bilene by the evening of 15th as C91DJ, C91MV, C91DL and C91KW. The callsign C91MS will be used for JOTA.
We will be visiting the Kruger National Park from 18th to 22nd when we will return to Bilene. We will be active under individual callsigns from then until 29th. We will be active in CQWW SSB under the callsign C91WW.

The RSGB is conducting a far-reaching survey of Amateur Radio within the UK and will be seeking input from a number of possible sources.

The analysis of the data from the survey will start at the end of 2010. It is anticipated that the main findings of the work will be published during the spring or early summer of 2011.
The London Underground, created in Victorian times, is the oldest and possibly the most awesome sub-terranean transport system to be developed over the last 130 years. As well as being the fastest way to get around our capital city, the London Underground has been used for wartime shelters and operations rooms. With its 255 miles of trackway, and tunnels dating back to the 1880s, maintaining such a complex transport infrastructure is no mean feat.
This week, we welcome Paul, G8YMM who will present a talk about what goes on behind the scenes to make the London Underground run, and the engineering of this complex network of trackways.

The upcoming Bonaire DXpedition by a combined Dutch and American team of Amateur Radio operators, plan to use the large antenna farm of Radio Netherlands. This will deliver to the world a truly whopping signal between 10th and 24th October when they activate the island for the first time after it becomes a new DXCC entity.
